[07 July 2009]
Today I started training at a local coffee place called Naked Coffee. The training process is pretty intense and kind of has me wondering if working in such an intense place is right for me. At this point I'm getting desperate for a job, so I'm going to tough it out. Today was 2 hours of going over stuff like where coffee comes from and stuff like that. Chris, the owner, gave us a booklet of info on the way they do coffee and we have to know the first half of it by Thursday, when we'll be tested at the beginning of our training and if we don't pass, we're sent home, without a job. At least we get paid for the training.

That's pretty much all I've got going right now. Still waiting on my business cards that I ordered. They were supposed to get here today according to UPS but it's past the time they said it should be here, so I'm not keeping my hopes up.
Edit: The UPS man just came, I was so stoked, the front with the photos looks beautiful, but I flipped the card over to find that they fucked up the backside with my name and info on it! Looks like I'll be calling them tomorrow to try to get it fixed.

I keep forgetting to take pictures of my "new" room and living room arrangements when there is good lighting. Maybe it'll be better in the morning when I get up to go help out with the UNIQUE table at the freshman orientation tomorrow.

Amy and I are minus one roommate until the end of August, so I've moved upstairs so that we can have our own rooms for awhile. We also decided to move around the living room furniture and her bedroom while we were at it, to make it feel like this is entirely our own place. It's pretty nice to have a change. I'll put up pictures of the new setup later.

Last night Amy's friend Chris came over and we drank way too much. The plan was to play Mario Kart on Chris's N64, but he can't find it, so we played James Bond 007 with slaps only, which is way more fun than shooting people up. I also tried to play Super Mario 64, but couldn't figure out where to start. I'll have to try to figure that out today.

Today I've got an interview at 24 Hour Fitness for a front desk person job, but it's a group interview, which I've never had and I'm really nervous about it. It's good because I really need a job, but at the same time, I don't see myself being very happy there. I'll try not to discount it too much before I even have an interview. Since I've been unemployed for over a month now, I'm starting to get restless and bored just sitting at home. The first few weeks after graduation were great. I got to read books that I wanted all the time, cook and bake, go on trips with friends, got some projects done that I've been planning for forever. But now I feel like I need to go out and do something, to contribute. I've been thinking of applying as a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club doing Arts and Crafts, but I haven't heard anything from the volunteer coordinator, so I might give her a call. It'd be perfect since I want to teach the arts in some way, particularly photography.

Amy and I were talking about moving next year, like we've been planning, but we've realized that unless we suddenly get super high-paying jobs, we won't be able to afford San Francisco so soon. So instead we're planning to move to midtown Sacramento, which is a lot more manageable money-wise and we'll be closer to all the things we love about Sacramento. Plus if we find a house to live in, Amy can get a dog and I can have a garden!

Last night I dreamed that someone restrung my ukulele wrong and didn't even bother to tune it. I was pissed. I proceeded to go on a rampage to find out who did it. Note to others: don't fuck with my ukulele or I will fuck you up.

There's something about seeing live music that makes me really re-evaluate how I feel about my life. The past month has been ups and downs. Graduation, seeing family, hanging out with friends, realizing that I didn't actually graduate and need to take 5 more units, job hunting to no avail, constant re-editing and compiling of my portfolio, making mixes for people... it seems like I've done a lot but it feels like I haven't really done anything. At the same time my life is pretty rad. I've got really good friends and a good family and I'm really lucky to have had the experiences I've had.

So yesterday Karen and I went to San Francisco to see Grizzly Bear. We decided to leave Sacramento early and spend the day around SF. Mostly we spent it in Japantown, which I've never been to before. I recently watched Lost in Translation and it made me want to go to Japan, so Japantown was like a mini-version. Tried a green tea shake with tapioca balls in it for the first time and decided tapioca balls creep me out. The tea shake was good though. I also found a stuffed animal block of tofu that I really wanted, but it was too expensive. Grizzly Bear was totally amazing and beautiful and all I hoped for. Those guys really know how to put on a show and the whole thing was just a beautiful experience. The show was sold out so the Fillmore gave out free concert posters.

All in all, I shouldn't be depressed about things that aren't worth being depressed about. Yeah, my luck with guys kind of sucks, but whatever. Things will only get better if I make the effort.

This a post for all those photographers/artists out there. I'm working on putting together my first photo portfolio outside of school, things that showcase what I like to photograph, not what I've done for school.

My dilemma is that I'm not sure exactly what kind of portfolio or album I should get. I hate portfolios that have glossy/plastic sleeves, so I want to avoid that as much as possible. I also really like my portfolios (or anything I make, really) to have a handcrafted quality to them.

The main things I want my portfolio to have:
- handcrafted, but professional quality
- no glossy sleeves
- ability to rearrange photos
- something unique

Any idea where I can get a portfolio that meets all those things?
